Steve Loduha – Elk

I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a cow elk hunt organized by Wyoming Disabled Hunters, and it was an experience my wife and I will never forget. As someone with a disability, hunting can often feel out of reach without the help of others; this opportunity truly provided that and got me outdoors, although it was only for a morning hunt (which is not a bad thing). From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with open arms by a group of volunteers that understood my needs and went above and beyond to ensure I had everything I required for a safe and successful hunt and everything we needed for amazing weekend.

The level of support and accessibility provided was second to none. Not only was the hunt itself well-planned, but every detail from lodging accommodations, meals to transportation and companion hunters (Rod and Rick) were taken care of. The companion hunters were patient, knowledgeable, and made sure that I was comfortable and prepared every step of the way (these fellas literally lifted me in and out of the truck). Furthermore, the beauty of the Wyoming countryside and the plentiful hunting opportunities made it an unforgettable adventure, also I felt a deep sense of camaraderie with the other participants who had a similar experience. Although I expected the hunt to be the pinnacle of the experience, I truly enjoyed the evenings together, just as much or if not more.

This hunt gave me the chance to experience the Wyoming outdoors in a way I never thought possible, and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity. I can’t thank Wyoming Disabled Hunters enough for giving me the chance to achieve something so special. It was truly an amazing experience, and I would recommend it to any disabled hunter looking for a unique, supportive, and empowering adventure.

Letter from Steve’s wife, Dawn Loduha,

There are so many nuances that people don’t get unless you live this life yourself.  We live on humor, wine, and the kindness of others. The week we spent with the Wyoming Disabled Hunters we had an over-abundance of all of that.

Earlier this year Steven was chosen to be a part of the Wyoming Disabled Hunters hunt in Cody. Waiting for our departure day felt like an eternity, but the week we were there didn’t seem nearly long enough.  We joined seven other hunters from around the nation and their caregivers in a lodge right outside of town. Mornings were filled with hunters and their volunteer hunter companions scurrying around grabbing a quick breakfast and warm cup of coffee before they venture to their hunting spots. Evenings were spent breaking bread together, celebrating hunting successes, sharing stories and photos of the day.

The volunteers that make this amazing event happen are some of the hardest working, kindest people I’ve ever met. Everything from the time we arrived to the time we picked up Steven’s elk was taken care of.  I mean the rugs were rolled up and put away. Who thinks of that?!

To say this was an amazing experience is a huge understatement.   We met wonderful people that I hope remain in our lives long after the meat.  To everyone that made this happen, thank you!
