From the moment I received the call from Terry, I was treated with the utmost respect and kindness from Wyoming Disabled Hunters. When Terry called to tell me I was selected, I was truly surprised, but also extremely excited. This had been a dream of mine since I was a child, but I understand there are many people who apply and only a select few are given this kind of opportunity.
Getting closer to the hunt date, I had experienced an issue with my tag, but Scott went out of his way to ensure I was taken care of. Miles was also very helpful in his guidance on what to bring and how to pack as I would be flying in from out of state. Upon getting into Wyoming and making my way to the lodge, I was greeted with beautiful scenery and a clean town in Cody.
My companion hunters, Neil and Mike, treated me very well. We drove around and I was ready to harvest the first animal I saw due to my excitement. They made sure we were making the best decision with regards to which animal I should harvest, but they always made sure I was happy with the decisions we were making as a team.
After some time driving and getting into some higher elevation, we finally stumbled onto a group of goats about 600 or so yards out. There was one buck that stood out and he was the one we were after. We closed the distance, but the animals weren’t quite cooperating. We waited them out while we got within about 400 yards. Long story short, within minutes, we had a nice buck on the ground and began the process to bring him back to the truck, then lodge, taxidermist, and, ultimately, my home.
Outside of the hunt, the volunteers were all fantastic. The accommodations were great. The food was great. The tickets to the museum were an added bonus, which I was able to utilize the day I was flying out.
All in all, it was a 5 star trip in my book. This is a group of people with servant mindsets and selfless hearts. They are truly great people and I can’t say enough nice things about them. I truly pray for and wish the best for WDH, and thank them for all they do for their hunters and guests.
Sincerely,
Nate Souza
