I first learned of Wyoming Disabled Hunters on Facebook and decided to apply, even if I didn’t think anything would come of it. A few months later, I received the call informing me that I had been selected for an antelope hunt. I was extremely excited and almost immediately started planning the trip from Pennsylvania to Wyoming.
We ultimately decided to drive cross-country. It was a long trip, but absolutely worth it. The Bull Moose Retreat was amazing. As soon as we arrived, we were introduced to the organizers and some of the other hunters. When all of the hunters arrived, we were taken out to shoot our rifles. Once it was determined all of the hunters’ rifles were on, we went back to the lodge for a delicious dinner and a chance to get to know the volunteers and one another.
On the morning of the hunt, I was taken to meet my guide at a spot about 10 minutes away from the lodge. Within an hour of getting to my hunting location, we spotted a good antelope and were able to get within 180 yards. After some deliberation with my guides, I decided I would take it. When it was on the ground, I was helped with everything from getting the head to the taxidermist to getting the meat frozen and prepared for the trip home.
I would like to thank everyone at Wyoming Disabled Hunters for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was great getting to know the other hunters and all the volunteers who helped us have successful trips. When I was younger, I always dreamed of hunting out west, but after I started using a wheelchair, I thought it would be impossible, so it was really great getting this opportunity and seeing what's really possible.
Thank You
